The William Tate Papers are composed of both personal and administrative files from Tate's tenure as Dean of Freshmen, Dean of Students, Assistant to the President, Dean of Men, Associate Professor of English, Dean Emeritus, and volunteer fund raiser with the UGA Alumni Society. These papers consist of: the personal correspondence of the immediate Tate family, relatives and friends (incoming and outgoing) for the period of 1924-1930; the administrative fields of the Dean Tate spanning the years 1924-1971; and Tate's personal reference file for the years 1925-1980.

The collection consists of biographical information, correspondence, school papers and writings, financial items, printed material, diplomas and photographs. The correspondence includes letters from York's siblings and friends. Much of the correspondence is written on humorous postcards of that time period. A 1913 letter from W. A. Cunningham (head coach at the University of Georgia) contains diagrams of football plays. The school papers include a University of Georgia football banquet program (1910) with signatures by coaches and players, and two compositions describing York's trip from Fort McPherson (Ga.) to Cuba in 1906. There are photographs of houses where Gus York lived, a wagon train in Cuba, county extension work, and a panorama view of the University of Georgia class of 1912-1913.
